Old-Fashioned Vanilla Milkshake

Made from barley malt, wheat, milk, and a touch of salt, Malted Milk Powder is the key ingredient in old-fashioned malted milkshakes. Use our Malted Milk Powder to give that distinctive malt taste to your baked goods.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. We do not recommend refrigeration or freezing.

Please Note: Our Malted Milk Powder does not dissolve in liquid. It will mix with your liquid to form a suspension, but the barley malt does not dissolve.

Note: 25 lb products will arrive in a bag.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Step one: Place your serving glass in the freezer to chill while you blend. A cold glass keeps your shake thick and frosty longer.
  2. Step two: Add the milk, Malted Milk Powder, and vanilla extract to a blender. Blend for 10–15 seconds. Malted milk powder doesn't fully dissolve (it forms a suspension) so blending it with the milk first gives you the smoothest texture.
  3. Step three: Add the vanilla ice cream and blend on low just until smooth and creamy. Don't over-blend, or the shake will thin out.
  4. Step four: Pour into your chilled glass, top with whipped cream and a cherry, and serve right away with a straw or a long spoon. Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • Start with great vanilla ice cream. Because the recipe is so simple, your ice cream does most of the work. A rich, full-fat vanilla bean ice cream gives the best results.
  • Want it thicker? Add a second scoop of ice cream, or use less milk. Too thick to sip? Stream in a splash more milk while blending.
  • No fresh milk on hand? Whisk 3 tablespoons of Hoosier Hill Farm Whole Milk Powder into 1 cup of cold water and use it in place of the dairy milk.
  • Serving a crowd? This recipe doubles, triples, or quadruples beautifully—just blend in batches so everything stays smooth.

Variations

  • Vanilla Bean: Swap the extract for the scraped seeds of half a vanilla bean.
  • Malted Chocolate: Blend in 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for a chocolate malt.
  • Coffee Malt: Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder for a grown-up twist.
