There's nothing like a creamy vanilla milkshake to celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day (June 20) - or any warm afternoon in between. This is the classic soda-fountain version, made with Hoosier Hill Farm Malted Milk Powder for that distinctive old-fashioned malt flavor you remember. It's the same simple recipe we print right on the jar, with just four ingredients and five minutes between you and a taste of the Heartland at home.

1 cup whole milk
4 tablespoons Hoosier Hill Farm Malted Milk Powder
1 cup vanilla ice cream
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, to serve (optional)

Directions

Step one: Place your serving glass in the freezer to chill while you blend. A cold glass keeps your shake thick and frosty longer.
Step two: Add the milk, Malted Milk Powder, and vanilla extract to a blender. Blend for 10–15 seconds. Malted milk powder doesn't fully dissolve (it forms a suspension) so blending it with the milk first gives you the smoothest texture.
Step three: Add the vanilla ice cream and blend on low just until smooth and creamy. Don't over-blend, or the shake will thin out.
Step four: Pour into your chilled glass, top with whipped cream and a cherry, and serve right away with a straw or a long spoon. Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

Start with great vanilla ice cream. Because the recipe is so simple, your ice cream does most of the work. A rich, full-fat vanilla bean ice cream gives the best results.
Want it thicker? Add a second scoop of ice cream, or use less milk. Too thick to sip? Stream in a splash more milk while blending.
No fresh milk on hand? Whisk 3 tablespoons of Hoosier Hill Farm Whole Milk Powder into 1 cup of cold water and use it in place of the dairy milk.
Serving a crowd? This recipe doubles, triples, or quadruples beautifully—just blend in batches so everything stays smooth.

Variations

Vanilla Bean: Swap the extract for the scraped seeds of half a vanilla bean.
Malted Chocolate: Blend in 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for a chocolate malt.
