Chocolate Ice Cream Mix

I requested this strawberry soft serve mix to use in my slushy/soft serve machine. The strawberry flavor is quite mild, and I found myself wishing it had a little more strawberry flavor. The texture was also somewhat icy compared with other mixes I've tried, although it wasn't bad enough to detract from enjoying the ice cream. If you prefer a subtle strawberry flavor, you may actually like this one, but I would have preferred both a stronger flavor and a creamier texture.

Good flavor. It’s kind of a cheat but this is a great way to make small batch fresh ice cream if you have a home ice cream maker. Made in the USA from a company in Wisconsin. So you know you’re getting a quality product.

This review is for the Hoosier Hill Farms brand of strawberry ice cream mix. Initially I had reservations about using this because I don’t have an ice cream machine but it turns out a blender can work almost as well. Since all an ice cream machine really does is churn while freezing you can simulate that by alternating blending with freezing on the blender’s low setting. The finished product is quite tasty. My only question is how good a value this is given the price point vs the cost of three quarts of premade strawberry ice cream. Price aside I give this my highest recommendation.

I just went in with a fork to stir it up every 30 to 45 minutes to break up the ice crystals. By the third stir, it transformed into a rich, smooth, and authentic soft-serve texture. The fact that it uses real dairy (milk and cream) instead of oily makes a massive difference in the mouthfeel. The strawberry flavor is very natural and not artificial at all, thanks to the beet powder maybe. Plus, because the pouch is completely shelf-stable, I can keep it in my pantry and whip up a single pint or quart whenever a craving strikes without wasting fridge space.

This add water only soft serve mix is quick to make and has a nice strawberry flavor. It's not too strong, the coloring is pretty subtle instead of bright pink and the texture is smooth. To see how well it mixed together I added powder to a cup and mixed with a spoon to see how quickly it came together. Without a lot effort the ice cream mix came together quickly and the power changed from white to a slight pink hue.The only downside I had was the mixture bag had a blowout out the top. Besides that the quality and consistency of the strawberry ice cream mix seemed really nice. The flavor is nice and overall I'm pretty happy with it.

My wife ordered this so she and our daughter could make their own soft serve ice cream, and they have had a lot of fun experimenting with it.The first thing we learned is to ask everyone in the house if they want some before you start. You really want to make approximately what everyone is going to eat at the time.The mix itself couldn't be much easier to prepare. Just add water and use it with your ice cream maker. The 35.4-ounce bag makes approximately three quarts, so there is quite a bit of ice cream in one package.Once made, this is terrific soft serve. It has a nice creamy texture and very good vanilla flavor, and we were impressed by how good something this simple to prepare could taste.We also discovered that the vanilla makes a great starting point for experimenting. My wife and daughter have added small pieces of fruit while making it and have come up with several different flavors. There are a huge number of combinations you could try depending on what you like and what you have in the kitchen.One thing we would recommend is enjoying it freshly made. We tried putting some extra soft serve in the freezer for later. It certainly freezes, but it becomes much harder and loses that wonderful freshly made soft-serve consistency. The Hoosier Hill farm soft serve ice cream mix tastes great. It has a smooth and consistent texture and taste that isn't grainy when frozen, but I had no idea that I needed an ice cream maker to take full advantage of this product. I have tried so many that just require mixing, freezing and serving which is what made them taste grainy from ice crystal formation. So, I brought some over to a neighbor who had a small mini ice cream maker that you place in the freezer and it worked just OK and somewhat like the others. The mix dissolves well and will freeze properly to make a nice snack that tastes great, but I cannot stress enough that a real ice cream maker can only do this product justice. The need for constant churning is a must to get that great soft serve feel. Overall, the value for the amount of product you get is perfect. The product has good ingredients that I found much better than cheaper brands.

Hoosier Hill Farm always has great products and when I got my new soft serve machine I knew I had to try this mix. I first used normal cream and it made good ice cream but was such a pain to get all the ingredients together and then make sure everything was in the perfect ratios to make the ice cream. With this Hoosier Hill Farm Soft Serve Ice Cream Mix it made everything sooooo much easier. You just add water, stir and follow the directions according to your machine. This is really the way to go so you always have ice cream ingredients on hand anytime you want to make a batch.This Chocolate flavor is really good and I plan to next try the Vanilla and Strawberry flavors. Fresh ice cream at home is soooo good!I have added a coffee mug to the pictures for size reference.

I had tried a different flavor from the same line the previous day and found it came out a little icy, so this time I added a small amount of guar gum, even though the mix already contains some. The resulting ice cream was very creamy and smooth, although it was a little softer and looser than other ice cream mixes I've tried in this machine. The chocolate flavor is mild and pleasant rather than intense, with a flavor that's very much like a chocolate milkshake or chocolate milk. I enjoyed it, especially if you prefer a lighter chocolate flavor.

This has a super chocolatey flavor that is almost too rich on its own, but the kids absolutely loved it. The adults enjoyed it even more after adding a little milk, which helped mellow out the richness and made it especially cream.There is also a lot in the package, so you get plenty for the price and don’t have to worry about running out quickly. Overall, it’s a big hit with both kids and adults, especially if you like a really rich chocolate flavor.To be completely honest, I don’t even have an ice cream making machine. I made it by following the recipe of water and mix, stirring it up, and putting it in a cake pan in the freezer. After waiting about 45 minutes, I started a little and put it back in for another hour. It turned out perfectly. Excellent product.

So, the powder is very hydrophobic. I wanted to just mix a sample to see if we liked it, and preserve the rest, if we did. We didn’t love it, because the powdery texture remained even after mixing and freezing and it tasted like ice cream with water, if you can imagine that. I recommend mixing this with a blender for at least 2 minutes to try to integrate that powder with the water, and it’s probably going to be wise to have a spatula on hand. The chocolate flavor is very tasty otherwise.

It's more akin to a Wendy's Frosty than it is to a typical chocolate soft serve from your local dairy bar. There's a certain appeal to the taste, but I imagine most people expecting a chocolate soft serve may be a bit disappointed by the flavor.The mix itself is fairly straightforward, though I would have appreciated the weights in grams as opposed to ounces, as many kitchen scales will present ounces in eights instead of decimals, and will display pounds once you've exceeded 16oz, requiring a bit more effort to measure out the required amount.After combining with water, the mix did seem a little clumpy despite whisking for a couple of minutes. However, once churned, the texture did come out fairly smooth, so that didn't seem to be an issue.The packaging was a bit rough when I received it, with some powder on the underside of the bag seemingly due to a small tear.At $25 (at the time of this review) for mix that produces 3 quarts of ice cream, you're very much paying for the convenience with this product. If you like that Frosty kind of chocolate ice cream taste, you may like this, but frankly combining some cocoa powder, milk, and sugar isn't that much more work and will produce a significantly tastier result.
