Customers praised this diastatic malt powder for dramatically improving bread rise, texture, and browning. "Takes bread to the next level," one said. Most found it excellent for bagels, pizza dough, and pretzels. However, some received products near expiration or with damaged packaging. Great value for serious bakers.

  • Takes bread to the next level - adds subtle, sweet malt depth that elevates to bakery-quality
  • Acts as a vitamin for the yeast, dough rises much better and faster with more attractive crust
  • Added half a teaspoon and the result was amazing - bread is nice and fluffy

Helps bread rise better and brown better

This diastatic malt powder works well in my bread recipes to help them rise better and brown better. All it takes is 1 teaspoon in my recipe that has 3 cups of flour. Unfortunately, they shipped this in a padded envelope and the container was crushed. I moved the malt powder to another container. The photo is a bun made from King Arthur Flour's hamburger potato bun recipe with 1 teaspoon diastatic malt powder added (and half whole wheat flour).

A Must have for wood fired pizzas.

This is an excellent value for the amount charged. I add this to my pizza doughs when baking in a regular & wood fire oven. Adds the nice leopard spotting to the crust and add a subtle but good flavor.

Great malt for NY style pizza

Came well packed, dry and this will be used regularly when I make NY style pizza dough. Big thumbs up.

Great color and flavor in bread

I used this to bake italian bread, and the results were great compared to the previous loaf I made without it. The first loaf is the results without, and while fine, there's a definite increase in flavor and changes to and crust in the rolls and loaves I made in the second through fourth pictures.

A Little goes along way

Used in pizza dough and bagels, but use caution!Adds a great malty flavor, add with flour not into water!!!Too much will make the finished products gummy.

Definitely see the difference

I’ve been using the same recipe and same machine for a year. I added half a teaspoon to the flour mix and the result was amazing. It rose so much that it hit the top of the bread maker lid. Normally, there is a gap. The bread is nice and fluffy.

Not for shakes or drinks

I’m so disappointed in this malt powder. I bought it to add to shakes for the old fashion malt flavor and the carb count wasn’t too high so I was excited to get it. It’s clearly not for drinking. It has a very bitter taste and for me not usable. It has high reviews for baking but I had no idea a powdered malt wouldn’t be good in a shake. I thought it was returnable but alas it is not. I’m stuck with it. I’m sorry for the one star but I want others that are looking for what I was looking for to read and know this is not it. If you are a pretzel maker I think this might work for you. 😢

Not the "malty. taste, I have used in past!

You get a big jug of Malt Powder. I think it 🤔 was near the back to the woods.I added it to my Big Train mocha & malt flavored coffee mix. It's tasty but can't really say it tastes like malt. Not malty enough. So, I purchased a jug of Malt here on AMAZON. Meh, it didn't tasty like chocolate malts I got as a kid. Like I said it's 👍 with the BIG Train mocha coffee mix!!I use milk,3 tbs malt,.1/2 cup big train depending on how much water you use,2-3 tsp of heavy and malt fl powder ice, After all combined shake in shaker or use in a blender!Pretty tasty and now we use 1/2 big train w/.half amount of bt mix, less cream powder, & malt, added extra coffee on occasion.Nom NOM NOM

Limited BEST BY DATE

After removing inner seal I noticed the BEST BY DATE is Nov 2021. I just received the product April 2021. It's hard, if not impossible, to use 1.5 lbs in just 7 months

Expiration date issues

Nothing wrong with the product itself but it expires in 2 months. Normally that's not a huge issue but it takes me about a year to use this up in my bread making. And also not sure if that will negatively impact the bread. I feel like many suppliers dump their older products on Amazon where the buyer can't verify dates.

VERY SHORT EXPIRATION DATE!

I purchased this product before and it worked really well. It improves the flavor of breads and it adds this beautiful color to baked bread. The reason why I gave it 3 stars rating because the company short change customers and sent the product with very short expiration date on it. It has only about 3 months of shelf life on my last order. It used to have 1 year of shelf life. That is 9 months short. I noticed there are other customers commented about the same issue. So please Hoosier Hill Farm, do not do this to your customers.

Open seal

Product seems fine but the seal was opened and quite a bit was poured into the package. Kind of disappointing

Watch that expiration date!

I just received this product. I plan to use it in my bread baking. Unfortunately, the expiration date is only 35 days away. There is no way that I'll go through even a decent portion of this before that time. I'm disappointed. Other than that misfortune, I don't have any experience with this product.

Short Use by this date timeline.

I really like this product, but it had an expiration date 6 weeks from when I received it. It was a VERY short timeline. I did inquire about it and did not receive a response. For this reason, it got 3 stars instead of 5.

Good stuff but was almost outdated

I needed this for a baking project and was a bit upset that it expired in just a couple weeks after I got it. kinda ridiculous

Only 7 weeks left??!!

Ordered Jan. 6, 2025. Only good till March 4, 2025! I‘ll be using 1 tsp per bread. The Diastatic Malt will loose quality. Not good! Wonder if I can freeze?

UPS is getting worse and worse

probably ok product. I've used this brand before but UPS left it down at the road in the rain box uncovered.

It's good for you, if there is definitely a learning curve on use but worth having..

Just learning how to utilize it in bread making, a little goes a very long way in bread. It does make great old time malted milkshakes.

Helps with browning of bread crust

I'm still experimenting with the diastatic malt powder, but 2 tsp in my bread recipe with 4 cups of flour has made an obvious difference in the color of the crust.I've been making bread in my bread machine recently, and while it tastes good, it comes out very pale. I couldn't figure out how to get the crust of the bread to brown. Well, some searching around online led me to this powder. Of course it isn't available anywhere that I know of locally, so Amazon to the rescue. The first loaf has turned out much better than the previous ones without the diastatic malt powder. So I'm going to try adding some more to see if I can get an even more brown crust, but it's definitely better than before already.

Disappointed

I didn’t use this yet but I only received it in august and it expires in September. I doubt I would be able to use it out before it expires

Great stuff, but very close to "best by" date.

I've used diastatic malt in baking for decades, it's great stuff that really brings bread, pizza, bagels and more up to a whole new level. This is my first time using Hoosier Hill's diastatic malt and I found it to be just as good as any other brand I've tried. I've baked several loaves of bread and three pizzas using it so far and they all turned out exactly as I expect them to. My only complaint is I ordered this on September 8, 2021, it arrived a few days later, and I noticed the "Best by" date of January 25, 2022 - just over 4 months. Typically, in my experience, most diastatic malt I've purchased had a "Best by" date of around 12 to 16 months when I purchased it. As I usually store malt in the fridge, I know from experience it'll stay good in the fridge for 9-12 months beyond the "best by" date, but that's with malt I purchased and chilled when it was still reasonably fresh when I bought it. Knowing this has likely sat on a shelf in some (most likely hot) warehouse for probably at least 6 months and maybe as long as a year means it probably won't last but a few months past "best by" date even in my fridge, and makes me really question the freshness and overall quality standards of Hoosier Hill.

Only used it once so far.

Have only used this once so far, Seemed to do what it is supposed to. The bread had good flavor. I used a heaping teaspoon for 2 1/4 cup flour.
